Miss Mary Hsiao Chu-an
Journalism and Media Studies Centre
I am honoured to be the recipient of the Social Sciences Outstanding E-Learning Award for 2019-2020. As a Teaching Assistant for HKU Journalism and The Common Core, I assisted in moving courses online during the Hong Kong protests and coronavirus pandemic.
My teaching philosophy is that modern students are products of the digitalised world who learn through the lens of technology. Thus, it is vital to accommodate students needs to make education effective in coexisting online and offline contexts. Effective teaching and learning are achieved through student-centred, experiential, flipped classroom approaches aided by technology that reinforce the modern learner’s active learning habits.
This approach is illustrated in my work. I am mainly responsible for assisting with the Common Core Course “The Journalist: Comics, Movies, Fiction and Fact” taught by Professor Keith Richburg, Director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. During lectures and tutorials, I aim to enhance students’ learning experience by using technologies, team online games, role play, polling, and mentorship to create an innovative learning environment.
I am grateful to my Department, Faculty, and University colleagues for their support and encouragement to reflect upon and share my teaching practices. I have given talks at Common Core sharing sessions and orientation workshops for tutors, in which I discussed online student engagement strategies. I am also grateful that my students have remained enthusiastic about learning. They worked hard during the online learning period, churning out outstanding digital student work as featured in “Unforeseen Circumstances,” a peer-reviewed multimedia online journal and exhibit space.
